Commercial oven cleaners are hard to rinse out of your oven. The taste gets in your food. Yuk!
Using toxic chemicals to clean your oven can contaminate your food. Yikes!
Some people get headaches or irritated eyes and lungs. Children and pets are the most at risk. Oh no!
You don’t need powerful toxic chemicals to clean your oven. Yes!
You can use these non toxic oven cleaning tips to clean your oven with little effort. You can also save a lot of money in the long run.
It won’t come as a surprise to you to find out that preventing your oven from getting dirty is the best defense. But, if you use your oven, you cannot prevent it from getting dirty. The bottom center of the oven is the worst.
However, you can place a piece of tinfoil on the bottom of the oven. This will catch a majority of spills. When it gets nasty, simply replace it. This can help avoid a lot of cleaning you would have had to do otherwise. How’s that for a non toxic oven cleaning tip!
Baking Soda and Water
A lot of people swear by this non toxic oven cleaning method.
This will get most of the simple grease and nasty stuff. Baked on food might be harder with this one of the oven cleaning tips.
Sprinkle about one-forth of an inch of baking soda on the bottom of your oven. Using a misting spray bottle, spray the baking soda until it is damp. It should have a pasty consistency. Dampen the baking soda again before you go to bed. The next day you can easily scoop out the baking soda and grime with a sponge.
There will be white residue you can remove with vinegar. After using any baking soda recipe, you’ll need to rinse the oven well.
Baking Soda and…
Some other baking soda pastes that people use to clean their ovens include:
- Equal amounts of baking soda and salt. Add water little by little to make a paste. Bake as you would with the canned cleaner. Sponge down after the oven has cooled.
- Baking soda and vinegar. The concoction will bubble at first. Wipe it down the next morning.
Other Pastes and Methods
Some other non-toxic home made cleaning solutions others let stand overnight include:
- Salt and lemon juce.
- Amonia in a bowl. Spills will easily clean up with a paper towel. An added bonus is that the ammonia can be reused.
- Wet, soapy sponges on top of baked-on food. Don’t let the sponge dry out.
Bake Off Grime Effortlessly
This one of the non toxic oven cleaning tips uses the idea of self-cleaning ovens. With a self-cleaning oven, the oven gets so hot, it incinerates whatever is caked to the inside of the oven. You should take the wire racks out of the oven before doing this. They may discolor if not.
After taking the racks out of the oven, turn the oven on as high as it will go. Let it get as hot as it can. Let it bake the contents for about three hours. If you have an auto shut off feature, it would be useful here, so you don’t forget.
While the oven is still hot, you should spray the inside with water. The heat and moisture should make stuck on food easier to remove when the oven is cooled.
After the oven cools off, wipe down the inside of the oven to get off other easily removed residue.

Of all the non toxic oven cleaning tips I can give, the best is to invest in a hand-held steam cleaner. I own one and it is my best friend when cleaning either the kitchen or the bathroom. From cleaning the top of the range, to the window in the oven, you will be amazed.
They are light weight and easy to use. For cleaning the oven, you will need a small to mid-sized brush at the end. You can easily get rid of grease and grime in no time.
I hope you find these non toxic oven cleaning tips useful and they make your home healthier, happier and cleaner!
